Requirements of Steel Connection Design

The following two requirements must be satisfied in order to classify a connection as nominally pinned, based on its strength: The design moment resistance of the connection does not exceed 25% of the design moment resistance required for a full-strength joint.
Requirements of Connection Designs
– Strength, Stiffness, and Ductility
– Deflection control & stability under service load
– Large Defection & Ductility at Ultimate load (over load) Connections are Complex Because
– They are more complex to design than members
– They have greater potential for variability in
behaviour & strength
– Most vulnerable component of a structure
– Failure of a connection often leads to failure of the structure
